What Is Spiritual Bypassing? (And why I give it the finger!)

In the realm of self-improvement and spiritual growth, the concept of spiritual bypassing has sparked many debates and controversies, particularly in the last few years. Some argue that promoting positivity without addressing negative emotions is toxic, while others believe that bringing light to the world is essential for growth. Obviously, as a healer with my purpose geared towards celebrating positivity, I encourage the use of tools to improve our mental states, however, in no way do I suggest that we should be bypassing any kind of emotions (including the negative). Actually quite the contrary.

In this blog, we will explore the essence of spiritual bypassing, its potential pitfalls, and why I choose to stay strong to my own beliefs without feeling offence to those with differing objectives. (I was totally joking about giving the finger, I promise ;) )

Rude Finger

If you haven't heard it before, spiritual bypassing is a term that is used when someone tries to "rise above" or transcend their negative emotions or life difficulties without fully acknowledging and addressing them. They may adopt an overly positive or enlightened attitude, believing that they should always maintain a sense of peace, love, and harmony, even when confronted with challenging situations.

While we explore this concept, it is essential to understand that spiritual bypassing, although often well-intentioned, can hinder genuine personal growth and healing. In saying this, I believe it is only a very small portion of the population that would fall into this category. Far more damaging (and unfortunately far more common) than "toxic positivity" is the use alcohol, drugs and other addictions used in attempt to numb the negative emotions (but that's a whole other can of worms to deal with another day!)

As painful as it can be, bypassing any emotion is usually something we cannot avoid, no matter how much we would like to! Most of us (like myself) understand that feeling ALL the emotions is necessary for growth and taking the time to work through them is a foundational process for humankind in order to move towards more enlightened views (or the Universe keeps throwing us the same lessons until we do - and don't get me wrong, I've totally been there too).

Now. While respecting spiritual bypassing as an actual thing, I do not dismiss the fact that the term is thrown around loosely, harshly, and often used negatively towards alot of spiritual enthusiasts and healers of all kinds without first understanding their beliefs or processes. I whole-heartedly believe using tools to help the healing process should not be shamed, in fact they should be celebrated and encouraged (and yes, obviously as long as we don't use them to mask or bypass deeper emotions as mentioned above - and no, I'm not rolling my eyes).

Those who label this kind of positivity as toxic might misunderstand the intention. It is not about denying negativity but rather approaching it with compassion and understanding. Genuine spiritual growth comes from confronting our darkness and finding light within it.

While spiritual bypassing may offer temporary relief, true growth and healing lie in acknowledging and processing our emotions authentically. Here at The Mantra Blends, we incorporate the use of (dare I say it) positive affirmation, mindfulness, and a range of meditation and healing techniques to promote deep self enquiry, discovery and connection. In essence, we aim to encourage self love through accepting ALL parts of ourselves, in all the ebbs and flows that life will throw at us. All of this while simply enjoying a cup of tea... ahhh bliss. Where was I....

To wrap this up (or I could go on all day) - positivity, when balanced with authenticity, can be a guiding force on our spiritual journey. Let us refrain from shaming one another and instead foster a culture of compassion and understanding, embracing the full spectrum of human experiences as we strive for genuine connection, growth and enlightenment.

IN OTHER WORDS...

Everybody Love Everybody

With respect and loving intention always,

Lauren xx
