Mindfulness Vs Meditation. What’s The Difference?

The terms meditation and mindfulness are often used casually and get thrown around loosely as popularity around the subject grows. I often get asked the question "what's the difference?" and if it's something you are unsure of, keep reading and hopefully you will get some clarity too. It is a quite complex and diverse subject that encompasses a wide range of concepts, but I will try to keep it simple in how I personally like to define the two.

So firstly, let's talk about meditation. Meditation been used for thousands of years by people all over the world as a way to reduce stress and anxiety while also increasing focus, concentration, creativity, and self-awareness. The goal of meditation is not necessarily relaxation (although moments of peaceful tranquility can be experienced with regular practice). Instead, it involves directing your attention inward, often by focusing on your breath, bodily sensations, thoughts, or emotions. The aim is to actively observe one's thoughts and emotions without attempting to suppress or switch them off, cultivating a deep sense of awareness and understanding of your inner experiences. During meditation, you observe your thoughts as they arise without getting caught up in them or attaching any judgements. By developing this introspective awareness, you can gain insights into your mind and cultivate a sense of inner peace and calm.

On the other hand, mindfulness is typically an external awareness practice. It involves paying deliberate attention to the present moment and the external stimuli around you. This includes being fully aware of your surroundings, the sensations in your body, the sounds you hear, the tastes and smells you encounter, and the visual stimuli you observe. Mindfulness encourages you to engage your senses and notice each experience as it unfolds, without judgment or attachment. The focus is on being fully grounded, present and engaged with whatever is happening in the current moment. Regularly practiced, you can find more joy, pleasure and gratitude for the blessings in your life.
